Directed by Roman Polanski, the multiple-award winning film is based upon the autobiography by Wladyslaw Szpilman. As a Holocaust survivor, Polanski himself shares a tragic war-time experience not unlike the pianist's, and he avoids any attempt at working up ersatz suspense or manipulating sentiment which gives the film a serene power.
