Based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Russian novel, Akira Kurosawa brought the material into Japanese culture just as he did his Shakespeares. It's a tragedy about a war veteran who had spent some time in an asylum who travels to Hokkaido where he experiences love and hate, and suffers the consequences.
