Helene sends a letter to Alphonse, a former lover from whom she was torn apart by World War II. Alphonse then arrives, bringing a woman named Francoise whom he calls his niece. Meanwhile, Helene's son Bernard continues a listless life, unable to get out of his head the memory of torturing a woman named "Muriel" during his service in Algeria. The relationships among the people gathered at Helene's house grow intricately entangled. Includes a work commentary booklet.
