最近は仮面舞踏会というと、ハチャトゥリアンの曲ばかりが有名になっているが、このグラズノフの作品も同じミハイル・レールモントフの作品を題材にしている。グラズノフはこの曲を1912～13年に作曲し1917年に初演。しかし当時はこの題材が「風紀を乱す」とされ30年もの間上演禁止となってしまった。ハチャトゥリアンが同じ題材に作曲したのは1941年。その頃にはグラズノフの作品は古くなってしまったのかも知れない。とは言うものの、ハチャトゥリアンのように直截的な悲劇性を感じさせることはないが、人の心に潜む狂気は存分に描き出されている秀逸な曲集。
