74年度日本レコード大賞を受賞した、森進一の大ヒット曲「襟裳岬」(岡本おさみ作詞・吉田拓郎作曲)を主題歌として製作された青春歌謡作品。従来の歌謡映画のテイストから脱却して、新しい時代の映画として踏み出した意欲作。「友情」と「ふるさと」をテーマとして、むき出しの素朴さがぶつかる人間愛と、きびしい自然の中で春を迎えるふるさとへの思いを、青春映画の傑作を手がけている加藤彰監督が映画化した。主演はグラビア他で活躍し人気が沸騰していた山口いづみが、本作で映画初主演、相手役に神有介と夏夕介。ハナ肇、金田龍之介、天地総子、坊屋三郎、山科ゆりほか個性的キャストが勢揃いした。また、森進一が特別出演し「襟裳岬」と「世捨人唄」を聞かせている。更に引退した話題の名馬・ハイセイコーも特別出演! という今となっては貴重な映画となった。音楽は吉田拓郎と、近年中島みゆきなどの音楽プロデュサーで活躍する瀬尾一三が担当、名曲「今日までそして明日から」や「我が良き友よ」なども挿入曲として使用され、新鮮な映画音楽世界をつくりあげている。HDリマスターによる初DVD化! 解説書封入(予定)。
