コロムビア創立100周年記念企画! 鮫島有美子デビュー25周年を記念し、原点である「日本の歌」を室内楽伴奏で歌うアルバム。「故郷」、「赤とんぼ」などお馴染の名曲(再録音)に加えて、次の100年へと歌い継ぎたい名曲を、ジャンルを越えて選曲している。なかでも、アルバムタイトル曲、「人生の贈り物」(さだまさし)や、「心の瞳」(坂本九)は、知る人ぞ知る隠れた名曲。人生の節目節目を振り返り味わいをかみ締める歌であり、「川の流れのように」(美空ひばり)と共に、本企画の中軸をなしている。フォークの名曲「太陽がくれた季節」が大きくイメージチェンジして収録されているのも注目。編曲はNHK大河ドラマなどで活躍し、さだまさし氏の盟友・渡辺俊幸氏。ピアノとストリングスを中心としたアコースティックな美しいサウンドが鮫島の歌声を引き立てている。
