MR. HOOD

[Machine Translation] K.M.D.'s debut album, Mr. Hood, is the second release in the <Cold Slammin'> series of hip-hop classic reissues, along with K Solo's Time's Up. ヒップホップ・クラシック再発プロジェクト<Cold Slammin'>シリーズの第2弾としてK・ソロ『Time's Up』と共に登場したのが、ロング・アイランド出身のヒップホップ・グループ、K.M.D.のデビュー・アルバム『Mr.Hood』。K.M.D.はグループのリーダー的存在であるゼブ・ラブ・X(現MFドゥーム)、その彼の実弟であるサブロック、そしてオニックスの3人によって'80年代半ばに結成。'90年リリースのシングル"Peachfuzz"は、ピアノや木琴の音色が美しく響く中に女性の笑い声が重なり、まるで夢見心地な雰囲気さえ漂うラブ・ソング。今だにヒップホップ・クラシックとして語り継がれる名曲である。その一方で、このシングルのジャケットには彼らのトレードマークとも言える男性の顔にバツの描かれた黒人差別の象徴とも言えるイラストが使われており、一見親しみ易く見えるものの、実は強烈なメッセージが込められている。独特の過激性とユーモアが混じり合ったK.M.D.の高いオリジナリティが既にこのファースト・シングルの時点で明確に打ち出されていた。万を持してリリースされた『Mr.Hood』は、テ・ラ・ソウルやトライブ・コールド・クウェストらのクリー、ネイティブ・タンとも通ずるサンプリング・ネタのセンスの ヌさや組み合わせの面白さがあり、さらに彼らの若さが反映されたかのような全体的に漂う軽快なグルーブ感がK.M.D.のオリジナリティにもなっている。さらに旅行者用の会話教材レコードを用いて作られたという、架空の人物Mr.フッドが登場するスキットからは、まさらにデ・ラ・ソウルのファースト・アルバム『3 Feet High And Rlsing』とも直結したユーモアのセンスが充満しており、'90年代初期で言うところの<ニュー・スクール>の空気感がダイレクトに感じ取れる。リリック面では、ユーモアだけではなく、いわゆるブラック・コンシャスな要素が多分に含まれており、ブラック・モスリムによるアフリカ会期の思想(=アフトセントリズム)の影響が見られる。その後グループは、しか言いようのない数奇な運命を辿る事になるが、リーダーのセブ・ラブ・Xは、90年代後半よりMFドゥームとして現行シーンを騒がせ続けている!!!
