As is widely known, no masters remain at the BBC itself, so every surviving source, broadcast discs scattered around the world and "off-air masters" recorded by fans, has been thoroughly researched and unearthed over many years. This release is the longest collection to date. Although the sound quality varies across the many broadcast programs the Stones appeared on, you can also hear how the band, who started out covering Chicago blues and Chuck Berry numbers, matured over the years in these valuable live takes. By 1964, Mick Jagger sings with growing confidence, and the two-guitar ensemble of Keith and Brian also grows more polished. Because these are studio live performances, Charlie's drums and Bill's bass are mixed louder than on the studio albums, letting you feel the Stones as a live band. The first-appearance version of the opening track, "Come On," for example, appears to have been rearranged for live performance compared to the debut single version, featuring a Keith guitar solo and dropping the key-change section. And since this uses a different master from the official releases, there is much here that could not be heard on the official versions, which have audible production mistakes. On "Ain't That Loving You Baby," a song that became a talking point as a previously unreleased track, you can hear one extra repeat of the first verse's refrain that was cut on the official version, and songs such as "I Wanna Be Your Man," "Around And Around," and "Down The Road Apiece," whose intros were missing on the official version, can be heard as complete takes on this CD. A phantom live performance recorded for British BBC broadcast between 1963 and 1967, in a limited-edition 2CD digipak sized like a DVD case.
