Wracked with guilt, he gives up on higher education and sailing, becomes the caretaker of the cemetery where Sam is buried, and leads a quiet life, playing catchpole at dusk with the ghost of Sam. One day, however, he is reunited with Tess ( Amanda Crews ), a high school classmate who is pursuing her dream of sailing. Charlie is touched by her kindness and dazzling personality, and his lonely heart gradually begins to open up to her.
