Description

[Machine Translation] It is well known that Ukiyo-e had a great influence on European painting, especially on Impressionist painters. This is so-called Japonisme. Shunga also had a great influence on Japonisme, and has been carefully collected by museums in Europe and the U.S., where its artistic value is highly regarded. Shunga is a world-class Japanese art form. This book introduces 100 of the best Shunga, rigorously selected by the author, a researcher of Edo period sexual customs. The book provides an insight into the people and things depicted in the Shunga, as well as the humorous "calligraphy" in the paintings. Although Shunga has recently been highly evaluated as an art and craft, this book focuses on the original purpose of Shunga, "eroticism," and explains how Edo people enjoyed Shunga.
