Schubert: Symphonies No. 1 & No. 3

The third installment in the cycle delves even deeper into the essence of Schubert with two symphonies. In 2025, Paavo Jarvi and The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (DKAM) launched a new recording project devoted to Schubert's complete symphonies. The first volume, featuring Symphony No. 7 "Unfinished" and Symphony No. 4 "Tragic," was selected as an Editor's Choice by Gramophone and as a Specially Selected Disc by Record Geijutsu Online. The second volume featured Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6, and acclaim for the cycle continues to grow worldwide. Recorded in April 2026 and already being released, this third installment presents two works from Schubert's youth: Symphony No. 1, his first symphony and a work that seems to declare his determination to carry on Beethoven's legacy, and the vibrant Symphony No. 3, also known as a favorite work of Carlos Kleiber. From a 21st-century perspective, Jarvi and DKAM capture Schubert, who opened the door to 19th-century Romanticism by introducing rich emotional contrasts into the formal beauty of Classicism, revealing the composer's forward-looking and innovative qualities while documenting the duo at the height of their powers. The recording was made at Teldex Studio Berlin, the first recording by Jarvi and DKAM at this venue. The Japanese edition is available exclusively as an SA-CD Hybrid disc, with stereo and Multi 5.0ch audio on the SA-CD layer.
