Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 & Gluck: Iphigenie En Aulide [Blu-spec CD2]

An official live recording by U.S. Columbia of a subscription concert by Bruno Walter and the New York Philharmonic held at Carnegie Hall in New York on Thursday, December 23, 1954, beginning at 8:45 p.m. The same program was performed again at 2:30 p.m. the following day, and both performances were recorded. Neither was released by Columbia at the time, and the recordings remained in the Sony Music tape archives for many years. The December 23 performance was first issued by Testament in 2008 and was released by Sony Music in 2016. Bruckner's "Symphony No. 7 in E Major" runs approximately 55 minutes, about nine minutes faster than Walter's 1961 recording with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra. Yet, even with the third-movement Scherzo racing by in under nine minutes, the performance never feels rushed, demonstrating Walter's remarkable artistic vitality at the height of his powers. The Gluck work is a first in Walter's recorded repertoire. This is its first standalone CD release from Sony Music.
