[Toho DVD Masterpiece Selection] "Oh! The Nomugi Pass -Shinryoku-hen-" released on DVD for the first time! A coming-of-age ensemble drama set in an age when the signs of labor disputes were growing stronger, depicting girls awakening to dignity and pride. The previous film "Oh! The Nomugi Pass" left a major mark on the history of Japanese cinema. Three years after that film opened, this work was born, welcoming a new cast and achieving further depth. To faithfully carry over the tone of the previous film, the master of socially conscious cinema Satsuo Yamamoto took the helm again, and Hisashi Yamanouchi was brought in to write the screenplay. Accomplished staff regrouped as well, including cinematographer Setsuo Kobayashi and composer Masaru Sato. For the lead, Junko Mihara (now written with her given name in hiragana), who at the time enjoyed enormous popularity as a top idol, was selected. In contrast to the tragic heroine that Shinobu Otake brought to life in the previous film, she gives a fresh performance as a new protagonist brimming with the vitality to face adversity. A lineup of young, accomplished actors of the day is also on hand, including Nana Okada, Kie Nakai, Jun Eto, and Eri Ishida, vividly portraying girls who live with single-minded devotion. - We will shed no more tears of sorrow. Goodbye - our Nomugi Pass. Where the previous film depicted silk mill girls at the end of the Meiji era, this work shifts the period to the end of the Taisho era and the beginning of the Showa era, as the dark shadow of war creeps in following the Taisho Democracy. The sorrowful cries of girls who are drowned out within the great current of history are told dramatically. At the Kanamaru Hayashigumi silk mill in the Suwa Basin, multi-end reeling machines are introduced so as not to fall behind in modernization, and a bonus payment system that stirs up a sense of competition among the mill girls is introduced along with a system of penalties. The girls, forced into harsh labor at the company's one-sided convenience, unite and rise up...
