Description

[Machine Translation] [Jazz the Best] The popular JTB 1,100 yen series now includes 100 new titles carefully selected from the treasure trove of jazz masterpieces on the Verve, Impulse, ECM, Emercy, Decca, and A&M labels. This is Billy's masterpiece and a milestone of jazz vocal immortality, containing his best songs from 1939 to 1944. The title track was a big hit in 1939 (#16 on the Billboard singles chart) and made Billy a star. The song is an indictment of racial discrimination, but instead of shouting it out loud, Billy sings it in a calm and restrained manner throughout the song, which makes the listener's heart clench. The other songs, led by this centerpiece, are all once-in-a-generation masterpieces. Recorded in New York City on 4/20/1939, 3/25/44, 4/1/44 & 4/8/44 [Personnel] Billie Holiday (vo) / Sonny White, Eddie Heywood (p) / John Williams, John Simmons (b) / Ed Shaughnessy, Sydney Catlett (ds) / Frank Newton, Doc Cheatham ( tp ) / Vic Dickenson ( tb ) / Tab Smith, Len Davis ( sax ) and others
