Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk

[Machine Translation] An Unparalleled Documentary Woven Together Through a Year of Video Calls In 2024, as Israel s attacks on Gaza continued, Iranian-born filmmaker Sepideh Farsi felt an urgent need to share the voices of the people on the ground. However, Gaza was under blockade, making it impossible to travel there. She therefore decided to produce a film centered on video calls with Fatma Hassouna, a 24-year-old Palestinian photojournalist living in northern Gaza whom she had met. From then on, video calls took place almost daily between the director who had sought asylum in France from Iran and could not return to her homeland and Fatma, who was the same age as the director s daughter and unable to leave Gaza. Fatma became the director s eyes on Gaza, while the director served as a bridge connecting Fatma to the outside world, and the two forged a bond. Despite being exposed to airstrikes, hunger, and anxiety, Fatma continued to capture images of citizens living with resilience and the few glimmers of light in the city, conveying the situation in Gaza through her smartphone. As the director described her as a presence like the sun," she was always cheerful, but as her family and friends were killed in repeated bombings, her expression grew darker. And then tragedy struck Fatma as well. On April 15, 2025 about a year after the two began their correspondence Fatma rejoiced at the news that the film would be screened at the Cannes Film Festival, but the very next day, an Israeli airstrike killed seven members of her family, including Fatma. Fatma, who had just turned 25, died in a way that would send ripples across the world just as she herself had written: If I am to die, I want my death to resonate far and wide."
