Mahler: Symphonies No. 1 / No. 3 / No. 4 [Limited Release]

[Tower Records x "Sony Classical" Ultimate SA-CD Hybrid Collection, 14th Release] A memorial release marking five years since the death of James Levine. Between 1974 and 1980, Levine recorded a Mahler cycle for RCA with three leading orchestras from Europe and the U.S.: the London Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Philadelphia Orchestra. Comprising eight works from the symphony cycle, with Nos. 2 and 8 absent, these recordings, together with those by Abbado, Mehta, Tennstedt, and others, helped ignite the worldwide Mahler boom as part of a "new, third-generation approach to Mahler." Making full use of the orchestras' technical excellence and beautiful sonorities, Levine draws out the sonic appeal Mahler embedded in these works to the fullest. Symphony No. 1, overflowing with forward-driving energy, was produced by the distinguished Charles Gerhardt. The two works included here with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, with which Levine had a close relationship as Music Director of the Ravinia Festival, are Symphony No. 3, in which the grand structure is presented with remarkable clarity, and Symphony No. 4, featuring soprano Judith Blegen, celebrated for her lovely voice. Both are landmark recordings of the analog era, revealing a suppleness and richness distinct from Solti's approach. Newly remastered for the first time in a quarter century. 4CD / IRL MID hybrid disc / Onsho label specification / multi-case / wraparound obi / includes lyrics and Japanese translations.
