This is the 1979 debut album from P-Model, the band that would influence most of the video game and anime soundtrack composers from the 80s on. When you listen to this album, you can immediately hear its footprint on what came after it. This isn't exactly a pop album; it is, but it isn't. It's anti-pop. What we have here is mad musical scientist Susumu Hirasawa making an album out of all the things he disliked about the burgeoning technopop and new wave genres, all the things that irritated him about how mindless and vapid it was and he and his bandmates mashed those bits together into a perfect new wave album. The album absolutely drips with loathing for the then new pop sound; some of the lyrics directly point at this palpable contempt, like "sophisticated foreign language song" at the end of a list of sophisticated absurdities, or the words "this song is pop" to point out the obvious. This album is a caustic parody that still sounds fresh almost half a century after it's release.

It’s frustrating there were no better sounding recordings available for this anniversary issue, but the rawness balances the band’s more pristine impulses well. Others who might have somehow missed delving into this rock archetype will have plenty to enjoy on what might be the final word for this archetypal recording.

If you’ve never been to a Roger Waters concert, it is always a visually stunning affair. Most of the songs themselves, of course, are pretty phenomenal. Which is only to be expected considering they are drawn from some of the most phenomenal albums in the known universe. I mean, you take a look at the tracklist, and it’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of great songs. You’d be hard pressed to find a live album in the past twenty years with a higher quotient of great songs.

Love or hate the music of Pharoah Sanders, you cannot deny the man's vision after hearing this record. His is an absolute genius approach to arrangement and performance. Though Sanders would release many great records and even mellow his distinctive tenor sound down, Karma is a record that deserves to be heard by any serious jazz fan.

It's a marvellous final gem concocted by a band winding down from an unprecedentedly fertile period of creativity.

What the album was also noted for, besides being a bit of a “return to form” for McCartney, was it marked a collaboration with Elvis Costello. The two wrote a number of songs together that ended up on both McCartney’s records and others on Costello’s albums. I have to admit, it was an inspired pairing. Elvis was another guy from Liverpool, who was kind of prickly, who seemed to click musically with McCartney and even wore glasses… remind you of anybody?
